What are the differences between LTL (less than full) and FTL (full truckload)?2024-02-27T17:48:59+00:00

FULL TRUCKLOAD (FTL)

Full Truckload (FTL) is a suitable option for transporting freight shipments weighing between 10,000 pounds and 44,000 pounds or are more than 15 feet long. Businesses with highly valuable or heavy haul items that are shipped in bulk generally require FTL trucking services.

ExFreight provides you with the facility to book appointments for your freight. Based on your requirements, we will notify you on the arrival of the shipment. We have the necessary equipment that may be required to transport your cargo. The maximum dimensions of our trailers are 100 inches x 110 inches x 53 inches. ExFreight provides both domestic and international Full Truckload (FTL) – Door to door service.

The Benefits of FTL (Full Truckload) Shipping Include:

• Less Handling: Since shipments remain in one truck for the duration of their movement, this option is a good fit for fragile or high-risk freight. No switching trucks, no repacking and no changing hands until it has reached its destination.

• Can Be Faster Than LTL: If you have enough freight to fill a truckload, this will be your fastest option because freight moves directly toward the final destination without any other stops or movements made for others shipping alongside you.

LTL TRUCKING – LESS THAN TRUCKLOAD SHIPPING

LTL trucking may be a fit for you if you’re: Shipping freight that doesn’t require a full truckload trailer of 48’ or 53’ feet, An online retailer or small businesses, Sending multiple smaller shipments to different destinations, Shipping freight that fits within a range of 151 to 40,000 pounds (lbs) with a linear length of up to 28 feet. Shipping rates are calculated based on a combination of weight, freight type and distance shipped.

The Benefits of LTL (Less Than Truckload) Shipping Include:

• Low Cost: If you don’t need a full truckload, or you’re making multiple smaller deliveries, chances are that you will save big time with LTL trucking options.

• Speed: Since you won’t have to wait until shipments are large enough to fill a truckload, you can begin delivering and shipping your freight quickly.

• Logistics, Pickup & Delivery Assistance: With LTL shipping, your freight is picked up at your doorstep with convenient lift gates, pallet jackets and more.

What is my freight class?2024-02-27T17:49:37+00:00

The National Classification Committee publishes guidelines to identify the freight class that relates to average density, stow ability, and valuation. ExFreight uses dimensional based pricing so your class will be based on the total average density of your shipment. Please use the density chart below to find your freight class.

50lbs or greater per cubic foot = class 50

35lbs-49.9lbs per cubic foot = class 55

30lbs-34.9lbs per cubic foot = class 60

22.5lbs-29.9lbs per cubic foot = class 65

15lbs-22.4lbs per cubic foot = class 70

13.5lbs-14.9lbs per cubic foot = class 77.5

12lbs-13.4lbs per cubic foot = class 92.5

9lbs-11.9lbs per cubic foot = class 100

8lbs-8.9lbs per cubic foot = class 110

7lbs-7.9lbs per cubic foot = class 125

6lbs-6.9lbs per cubic foot = class 150

5lbs-5.9lbs per cubic foot = class 200

3lbs-4.9lbs per cubic foot = class 250

2lbs-2.9lbs per cubic foot = class 300

1lbs-1.9lbs per cubic foot = class 400

>1lbs per cubic foot = class 500

The higher the class the higher the rate.

What is cubic capacity?2024-02-27T17:50:06+00:00

Cubic capacity is specifically a North American LTL trucking term. It imposes minimum cubic capacity rules to effectively counter very light, fluffy shipments that take up more than their fair share of a trailer. Most LTL carriers in the cubic capacity rules do not kick in unless the total shipment is over 750 cubic feet and has a density of less than 6 lbs per cubic feet. Some carriers are even as low as 350 cubic feet. When your shipment hits the cubic capacity rule the carriers will levy hefty additional cubic capacity fees to your freight invoice. ExFreight’s Exfresso rating system automatically calculates if your is at any carrier’s cubic capacity, and will disqualify carriers if your freight is over the limit saving you additional fees. You can, rest assured that a rate in the ExFresso platform is correct and valid.

What is a loading meter?2024-02-27T17:50:47+00:00

A loading meter is also known as LDM is a standard unit of measurement for transport by truck in Europe. A loading meter is equal to one meter of loading space of the truck’s length. The calculation to determine the number of loading meters is: length in meters x width in meters / 2.4 = number loading meters per piece. Add up each piece’s total loading meters and you have the total loading meter value for the entire shipment. Similar to the NMFC freight class system in the USA, European LTL truck carriers use the loading meter calculation to determine an adequate amount of dimensional weight for each shipment. A majority of the carriers use a minimum billing weight of 1850 kgs per loading meter. Therefore if your shipment is less than 1850 kgs per loading meter you will be billed at 1850 kgs per loading meter.

In addition to the loading meter weight rule, European trucking carriers also utilize a density weight rule which assigns a minimum weight per cubic meter of each shipment. A typical density weight rule is 333 kgs per cubic meter.

It can all be very confusing but in simple terms, each carrier will bill you based on the greater of the following three calculated weights. The actual weight of your shipment, the loading meter weight of your shipment, and the cubic meter density weight.

ExFreight’s Exfresso rating system automatically calculates all of these weights and quotes the proper rate to you so you don’t have to worry if you calculated it incorrectly. We make shipping easy.

What is a reconsignment?2024-02-27T17:51:27+00:00

A reconsignment is the term used when a shipment that is already in transit requires the delivery address to change. There is an additional fee when this is required. The fees are typically calculated based on rating the shipment from the pick-up address to the point or location at which the shipment is able to be stopped Plus the rate from the point or location the shipment was stopped to the new delivery address. Depending on where the shipment is these fees can be high. In addition to the freight rates covering the added distances, there are also administrative fees to relabel the shipment and in cases where the shipment is an international shipment and it needs to be sent to another country, there could be custom entry fees to report the re-export of the shipment. If you need to reconsign your shipment please contact our customer service team today by emailing osd@exfreight.com.
